Published in 1973 by Henry Newrick the book showed auction prices and also had biographical data on hundreds of New Zealand artists – a task that took the author months of research to complete. When copies come on the market they generally fetch $25-$50.
It’s absolutely fascinating to look back on auction prices 50 years ago, compared to what the artists fetch today. In 1970 a large McCahon oil sold at auction for $100. Today that painting is worth around $300,000. Many other artists have not fared so well, particularly the lesser colonial artists whose values have only increased a little or even slipped.
I am preparing a new volume. It looks at art prices over the past 50 years; which artists have done well and those who have fared rather badly. It is hoped to have the updated book out by the end of this year.
The new volume will examine the economics of art and also make some attempt to pick tomorrow’s winners.
